Chat Noir

Original articles and accessories of famous Chat Noir

Le Chat Noir was a famous club for the performances of shadow theater and cabarets of Montmartre in Paris, founded in 1881 by Rodolphe Salis. Located near the hill of Montmartre, Le Chat Noir was one of the main meeting places of Paris and the symbol of La Bohème at the end of the nineteenth century.
Some say the name is due to a Salis encounter with a black cat during the works, according to others the name and image of black cat were taken from a drawing found on a wall during the restoration work of a previous local. The famous sign was painted by a friend of Salis, Theophile Alexandre Steinlen, in 1896. The original is now exhibited at the Zimmerli Art Museum in New Brunswick (New Jersey, USA).
